Council OKs new police car, gun sale

The Butler City Police Department will be getting a new vehicle for its canine unit.

City council passed a motion at Thursday's meeting to authorize Police Chief Ron Brown to solicit quotes for a vehicle not to exceed $9,000.

The department already has a used vehicle with 21,000 miles on it lined up for purchase for $9,000.

“It's one of these deals you can't pass up,” said Mayor Tom Donaldson.

The money will come from the canine fund, which councilman Michael Walter said would be at $6,500 after the purchase.

The vehicle will need a radio, a computer stand and fans for canines installed.

A motion also was passed to declare certain firearms held by the police department to be surplus property valued at less than $1,000.

The motion authorizes the sale of the firearms for the best price available or to trade the firearms to another police department for other equipment.

The firearms that will be sold are 40-caliber, Ruger patrol rifles.

“(The department) doesn't use them,” Donaldson said. “To compare them to the AR15 rifles, why would you take it out on the road?”

The money made from the potential sales would go into the department's firearms fund.
