Bowser stays busy behind wheel

SARVER — Veteran Sprint car driver Carl Bowser hasn't found his way to victory lane yet this season.

But the Freeport graduate and 30-year-old Sarver resident is finding his way to plenty of racetracks these days — and doing so often.

Bowser is in the middle of a stretch that will see him race at seven different tracks in nine days.

“I've never done anything like this before,” he admitted. “I'm excited about the challenge, but I'm sure I'm going to feel worn out when it's over.”

Bowser began his odyssey by placing third in the Sprint feature last Friday at Lernerville Speedway. He is a two-time track champion there.

He competed at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin on Sunday before venturing to the Wayne County Speedway in Orville, Ohio, for the Tony Stewart All Star Circuit of Champions race Monday night. Bowser wound up finishing seventh in the C-Main that night.

From there, Bowser headed to Sharon Speedway for a special race Tuesday night. He took Wednesday night off.

The busy stretch of racing ends with an event at the Muskingum County Speedway in Ohio tonight, the Yellow Breeches race at Williams Grove Speedway Friday, followed by a weekly Saturday show at Port Royal Speedway.

After that, Bowser will take a week off.

“It's tough to put a crew together for something like this because people have jobs and can't get off work,” Bowser said. “I have a crew assembled for the races during the week and my regular crew on weekends.”

One member of his crew who will be there for all seven races is Bowser's wife, Kristin Swartzlander. She is the niece of multiple-time Lernerville Modified points champion Brian Swartzlander and is part of a family with a long history of dirt track racing.

“I grew up on this stuff,” she said. “I'm pretty good at reading tracks and offering advice that way.”

Swartzlander also handles the social media and marketing end of the Bowser race team.

Bowser has collected 30 Sprint feature wins in his 12-year career. That breaks down to 21 wins at Lernerville, five at Pittsburgh Pa. Motor Speedway at four at Mercer Raceway.

While Bowser has five top-five finishes at Lernerville this year, he is racing at numerous tracks outside of the area for the first time.

He is driving for car owners Tom and Fran Chiappelli this season.

“We are grateful to Tom and Fran for wanting to do this much racing,” Bowser said. “This is a totally new experience for me. We've got 65 races on the schedule this year and we've averaged 35 to 40 in the past.

“I got myself in shape for this. At the start of the year, I was able to lose 25 pounds. This takes a lot out of you.”

But Bowser is taking steps toward a long-range plan.

Swartzlander described their experience in doing Ohio Speedweek with the All-Star circuit as “testing the waters.”

Bowser has qualified for all but two main events in the All-Star race cards he's taken part in this year.

“We ran a lot of All-Star races last year, too,” Swartzlander said. “Our goal is to become more and more competitive that way, maybe one day join the World of Outlaws.

“Those are lofty goals. We have to take gradual steps, do it in a way that's realistic.”

Bowser has enjoyed the process thus far.

“We're getting better with each race,” he said. “The key is consistency. That's what we're striving for.”
