Butler man sentenced for arson, aggravated assault

John P. Conley

A Butler man, charged in two violent crimes days apart, including starting a fire in his family's rental house and then stabbing a man with a knife, was sentenced to four to eight years in state prison in Butler County Court on Thursday.

John P. Conley III, 28, was sentenced by Butler County Judge Timothy McCune after pleading guilty June 13 to several charges in both cases, including five felony counts of arson, criminal mischief, two counts of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, felony illegally taunting a police animal, misdemeanor resisting arrest and two counts of felony aggravated assault.

Chief among the sentences was 30 to 60 months for the five arson charges and 18 to 36 months and 12 to 24 months on the aggravated assault charges.

Conley was initially charged with six counts of arson, causing a catastrophe and criminal mischief — all felonies, as well as two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of children, five counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of simple assault after an incident on Standard Avenue, Butler, on Dec. 6.

He was then later charged with attempted first-degree murder, burglary, taunting a police animal and four counts of aggravated assault, all felonies, as well as misdemeanor resisting arrest after an incident in the 300 block of Fairview Avenue, Butler, on Dec. 11.

A full report will appear in tomorrow's Butler Eagle.
