Monday — Johnnie Mae Nagowski, 23, of Butler was charged with stealing money from the 7-Eleven on Pillow Street while she worked at the store June 6.

A store manager on June 16 reported the suspected employee theft, police said. Store surveillance video showed the defendant taking money from the cash registered and hiding it on her, according to court documents.

The manager checked the register that Nagowski was using and found it was $250 short. She is charged with misdemeanor theft.

Monday — Police charged Richard J. Dortman, 56, of Butler with drugged driving stemming from a call last month for a man passed out in a Jeep at a traffic light at South Main and Diamond streets.

Police said they found Dortman at the wheel in the vehicle that was running. He was apparently unconscious and the Jeep was in the drive position. An officer opened the unlocked passenger door and put the vehicle in park.

The officer shook the defendant before he came to, according to court documents. He showed signs of being impaired and subsequently failed field sobriety tests.

Dortman was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital where he nodded off several times during a blood draw. Toxicology results later showed he had several drugs in his system, including cocaine, methamphetamine and alprazolam.

Additionally, documents noted, his blood-alcohol level was 0.013 percent, well below the state’s 0.08 percent legal limit.

Dortman is charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

3:26 p.m. Monday — A car driven by Elizabeth Homa, 89, of Butler struck another vehicle on New Castle Road at the Cochran Subaru dealership. Nicholas Hasychak, 73, of Butler was the other driver. No one was hurt but both vehicles had to be towed.

2:09 p.m. Wednesday — Cheryl Fennell, 55, of Butler was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of a controlled substance on Main Street in Harrisville. She also had “improperly packaged prescription medication,” according to a police report.

Fennell was later taken for a blood test. Police said charges are pending toxicology reports.

4:30 p.m. Saturday — Timothy A. Baer, 44, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a former girlfriend during a domestic dispute at his home in the 300 block of Chicora Road in Oakland Township.

The alleged victim told police that Baer grabbed her by the back of the head and threw her to the ground, according to court documents. She suffered minor injuries including bruising to the shoulder and lower left eye. The same eye also was swollen.

Baer was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment, and later released on his own recognizance.

1:08 p.m. Monday — Cars driven by Abigail E. Hartman, 22, of Ellwood City and Kathy A. Bell, 53, of Foxburg collided at Route 38 and North Washington Road in Washington Township. No one was hurt but both cars had to be towed.

Police cited Hartman for a stop sign violation and Bell for driving at an unsafe speed.

7:55 a.m. June 15 — Steven A. Garcia, 52, of Valencia was arrested after he allegedly broke into a home in the 200 block of Hilltop Drive in Center Township.

Police said a girl who was in the house contacted her father to report an unknown man was inside. Troopers got there and found Garcia.

“(The defendant) related that he was at the residence because he used to live there and had been inside to look for a safe that he had left there when he moved out of the house,” according to court documents.

Garcia was arraigned on a felony charge of trespass and a summary charge of disorderly conduct. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment

June 15 — A Mercer County man was charged with passing a fraudulent traveler’s check last fall at the Boscov’s store at Clearview Mall in Center Township.

The suspect, James O. Newton, 62, of Sharon, bounced the $100 check Nov. 29 while buying some clothes.

June 15 — David E. Weisenstein, 28, of Butler Township was charged with drugged driving in connection with a traffic stop last summer in Center Township. Police said they stopped him about 4:45 p.m. July 11 at Mercer and East Brewster roads.

Police said Weisenstein appeared to be impaired and he later failed field sobriety tests and a drug recognition expert’s evaluation.

A search of his sport utility vehicle, according to court documents, turned up an empty stamp bag of suspected heroin, a crack pipe and three syringes.

Weisenstein was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology reports showed he had cocaine and morphine in his system.

In addition to driving under the influence of a controlled substance, he is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, failing to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes, not using turn signals and careless driving.

Friday — Frank D. Bell, 65, was charged with being more than twice the state’s legal limit for alcohol after police found him last month lying in the driveway at his home on Orchard Drive in Prospect.

Troopers said by the time they got there about 4 p.m. May 18, Bell was awake. He recounted that he had lost his balance and fell while getting out of the car. He also admitted that he had driven home from a liquor store and a doctor’s appointment.

A blood test subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.217 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

Bell is charged with driving under the influence.

June 5 — Police charged a Tennessee man with violating a woman’s protective order. The suspect, Jonathan J. Traver, 40, of Rogersville, is accused of leaving several messages on the victim’s home phone in the 300 block of West Cooper Street in Slippery Rock.

Police said the messages, which the victim saved on her answering machines, were received May 1.

Traver is charged with misdemeanor and summary counts of harassment and violating a protection from abuse order.
