Saxonburg remains unbeaten with 7-0 win

Saxonburg pitcher Logan Hickey prepares to deliver to the plate during his three-hit shutout of East Butler Tuesday night.

JEFFERSON TWP — Logan Hickey knew just what to do on the mound.

“Just throw strikes. The other guys will do the rest,” the Saxonburg right-hander said.

Hickey threw 61 of his 95 pitches for strikes Tuesday night, tossing a three-hit shutout as Saxonburg remained unbeaten with a 7-0 Butler County legion baseball victory over East Butler. Hickey struck out eight and walked only two batters.

Saxonburg improved to 9-0 and has outscored its opponents 98-17 so far this season.

“They didn't give us anything. That's why they're undefeated,” East Butler manager Russ Scott said. “They do everything very well.”

East Butler (6-6) got only two runners to second base in the contest. Isaiah Lucas led off the fourth inning with a double, but never moved. Hayden Kretzer singled to open the fifth, but was forced at second on a Connor Miller ground ball.

Miller moved up on a wild pitch. Hickey struck out Jay Keefer and got Brandon Hildebrand to pop to second to end the inning.

“Logan pitched a couple of games for Butler County Community College this year,” Saxonburg manager Mike Hickey said. “He knows what kind of defense he has behind him here.

“He never got himself in trouble.”

Shortstop Mike McCarty backhanded a hard ground ball in the hole to take a hit away from David Matson in the second inning. Second baseman Derek McGill made a lunging stop of a Lucas ground ball in the sixth to rob him of a hit.

McGill got Saxonburg on the board in the second with a run-scoring double down the left field line. He later crossed the plate himself on an infield error. An RBI infield single by McCarty gave Saxonburg a 3-0 lead in the inning.

Ben McMillen drilled a solo homer to left in the third.

“We've hit a few balls over the fence this season,” manager Hickey said. “James Flemm hit two homers in our last game and Ben hit one a couple of games back. And Alex Stobert has hit some out.”

Saxonburg could have done more damage in the second inning. With the bases loaded and Stobert at the plate, Logan Hickey tried scoring from third on a wild pitch, but catcher Hildebrand flipped the ball to pitcher Matson to throw him out.

The play ended the inning.

“A ball to the backstop in this park is usually a guaranteed run,” manager Hickey said. “We cost Alex a chance to hit with the sacks loaded. That one's on me.”

A three-run Saxonburg fourth — highlighted by a Flemm two-run single — put the game away. Flemm has 12 RBI in the past two games.

Flemm had three singles in the game while McGill doubled, singled and scored twice for Saxonburg.
