Oakland Twp Elementary School sale cancelled

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School Board voted Monday night to cancel its agreement with businessman Monty Edgar to sell Oakland Township Elementary School.

The board had the option to void the agreement, because it contained a stipulation stating that if the district is required to spend more than $10,000 on repairs needed to close the sale, then it may chose to cancel.

The district passed that threshold earlier in the year when it spent money with engineering firm Gannett Fleming to investigate water issues at the school, which gets its water from a well.

The school was to be sold to Edgar, who owns Woodbine Oaks Trailer Park, for $363,600. The sale was approved by a county judge in September, but the sale had not closed.

In light of the water issues, the board asked Edgar to provide a counter offer in April. His offer was discussed in an executive session at the end of the board's meeting Monday night.

The board also voted to seek new offers to buy the school “as is.”

A new sales agreement would, by law, have to be approved by a county judge again, Acting Superintendent William Pettigrew said.

Pettigrew said that he has already heard from two parties that were interested in pursuing the property. Edgar made the only bid the first time the school was put on the market, though other people expressed interest.

The school is one of four elementary schools that the district closed in 2015 and planned to sell. Clearfield Township Elementary and Meridian Elementary have been sold.

Broad Street School in Butler has not been sold and is currently being used as a temporary replacement for Summit Township Elementary.
