Head-on crash kills driver, injures 2 others

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — A 57-year-old Grove City woman died from injuries suffered in a head-on crash Monday afternoon on Route 258, according to state police.

Two adults and one child suffered serious injuries in the accident, which happened around 4 p.m. near the intersection with South Creek Road.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla, Judith E. Swartz, was flown to Grove City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 5:18 p.m. She died of severe injuries to the chest. A 4-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was flown to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and was reported as being in stable but serious condition immediately after the crash.

The other driver, Alyssa J. Ferlin, 26, of Jackson Center, Mercer County, was driving a Buick Century. She was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh and was in stable condition this morning.

A police investigation found that Swartz crossed the double yellow line and crashed into the Buick, according to police.

They also allege that the child safety seat for the 4-year-old girl was used improperly.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, according to policeFirefighters with the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company had to extricate the drivers from both cars by cutting doors off the vehicles, said Ryan Hanchosky, assistant chief.Three medical helicopters were called to transport the patients. Two landed at the Slippery Rock Elementary School, while the third landed on a front lawn near the crash.The road was closed for several hours between Kelly Boulevard and Liberty Road while a state police forensics unit was called to reconstruct the crash.
