INDIANA — Caleb King, an applied mathematics and economics double major at Indiana (Pa.) University in the Cook Honors College, has been appointed by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf to serve as the student trustee on the IUP Council of Trustees.

Members of the Council of Trustees are responsible for financial oversight of the university and for ensuring compliance of university policy with state law.

King, of East Brady, is a chief justice for the Student Government Association, a member of the Fredrick Douglass Debate Society and a tour guide for the Cook Honors College. He participated in the Alternative Spring Break service project in Tennessee building hiking trails along the Cumberland Trail.

He also is the recipient of the Arthur G. Morrell Memorial Scholarship from the mathematics department.

King is a 2015 graduate of Karns City High School and the son of Steve King and Petula King.

JACKSON TWP — Twenty-two Seneca Valley High School juniors were recently recognized for participating in the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute.

The institute offers Saturday-morning lectures from October through March, on selected topics in science and engineering. The program is a forum for talented high school juniors to gain exposure to the latest advances in science, technology and engineering, learn about careers, and interact with students from other schools.

The following students participated at least seven of the 12 lectures or six lectures and the optional field trip to Penn State Radiation Science and Engineering Center's Breazeale Nuclear Reactor: Erika Bender, Casey Colbert, Alex DeDionsio, Sarah Ditmore, Alex Dixon, Elizabeth Fronk, Alexander Garcia, Sierra Koerbel, Kyler Lin, Ashley Linton, Abby Lizewski, Samantha Mill, Thalia Munoz-Malave, Lindsey Ocheltree, Luke Peffer, Jacob Pfeiffer, Shannon Pfeiffer, Tanner Sherry, Sarah Sweeney, Alina Taylor, Taylor Teitelbaum and Joanna Valentas.

INDIANA, Pa. — Luke Walker of Butler and Jacob King of East Brady were selected for the Sutton Scholars academic achievement scholarship program at Indiana (Pa.) University.They were chosen following an on-campus competitive interview process. The scholarship can be renewed for four years of study.Walker, son of Ken and Helen Walker, is a senior at Butler High School. He is the marching band percussion section leader and a member of percussion ensemble, concert band, Butler Symphony Musician of Note, Jesus Alive and Living Youth Group Mass, and Autumn Symphonic Winds. He achieved the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association district and regional bands, district and regional orchestras, and all-state orchestra; and Butler All-School Musical.Walker plans to major in music education at IUP.King, son of Steve and Petula King, is a 2017 graduate of Karns City High School. He is an honor roll student and was selected for the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference first team all-conference quarterback. He is a member of National Honor Society, student council, Stand Tall, weightlifting club, varsity football, varsity baseball, and track and field. He participates in Westinghouse Honors Institute, parish fish dinners, peer leadership and Don White Student Government Seminar.King plans to major in biology, pre-med at IUP.———MARS — JonPaul Plesniak, a junior at Mars High School, competed in the 83rd annual Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science State Competition held at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.Plesniak received first place in the physics category for his research project, “Energy Charge and Discharge of Supercapacitors.”He also received a $2,000 per year scholarship to Penn State's College of Engineering program. Plesniak plans to pursue a career in chemical engineering.The state competition brought together about 3,000 students in grades seven to 12 from school districts across the state.———Eighty-two Butler High School Latin students recently traveled to Penn State University to compete in the 66th annual PAJCL State Convention.In their most impressive showing to date, Butler took home the second place overall trophy, winning 80 awards in the academic, athletic, graphic and creative arts categories and winning the overall chapter spirit competition for the third year in a row.Butler's Latin Club, officially named the Butler Junior Classical League, is the largest Junior Classical League chapter in Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 226. Any of the nearly 400 students in grades eight to 12 in the Butler School District who study Latin are eligible to participate in the chapter.Butler students received awards in a variety of categories during the state convention:Academic Testing winners from Butler were Alec Stamm, Chloe Paulisick, Miles Schaeffer, Emma Teff, Lauren Coyle, Katie Knights, Natalie Marburger, Robert Arcuri, Roman Beran, Rachel Pracht, Timmy Porter, Elijah Hall, Jenna Lauther, Tressa Hendrix and Nathaniel Friel.A team of Gabby Finan, Nathaniel Friel, Jordan Ray and Miles Schaeffer won in Certamen, a quiz-bowl competition.Butler's winners in Graphic Arts were Emily Bilowich, Nikki Kudamik, Chloe Paulisick, Julia Coyle, Gabby Finan, Madeline Fox, Julia Marchyshyn, Danielle Haley, Emily Yasinsky, Lauren Ban, Cecelia Pellegrino, Brooke Dingel, Tressa Hendrix, Giulia Pucci, Rania Rashid, Chase Livermore, Chloe Fleming, Vincent Pellegrino, Elizabeth Friel, Paige Williams and Andrea Jones.Michaela Brydon and Ben Wong were named best-in-show for all of the Creative Arts performances at the event. Butler's other Creative Arts winners were Alec Stamm, Joe Atkinson, Miles Schaeffer, Reed Kruger, Jadyn Noullet, Lauren Coyle, Cailin Cornman, Gabby Finan, Rachel Pracht, Elizabeth Friel and Madeline Fox.Track and field winners were Timmy Porter, Brett Brady, Sammy Dietrich, Cienna Tonini, Leah Bowden, Giovanni Nanni, Katie White, Caitlyn Martin, Tom Greaves and Seth Archer.———GROVE CITY — Five teams of students from Butler County high schools competed with their business ideas in the second annual Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV Final Business Pitch Contest.MIU IV's Entrepreneurship Academy students presented their ideas in front of potential investors and judges.FNGRtip team members Madison McCall, Brenna Moore and Christina Rossi of Knoch High School won first place.DonateYourData team members Megan Vettori from Knoch and Kierra Thiry from Moniteau High School won second place.Bueno Bracelet team members Klaudia King and Jamie Gizienski from Knoch and Keiana Hovis from Moniteau won third place.Boîte D'Amour team members Alexandra Jamison from Moniteau and Megan Thrower from Knoch won fourth place.Fox's Woodworking team members Braden Fox and Trace Trempus from Knoch and Michael Williams from Moniteau won fifth place.The Entrepreneurship Academy program helps prepare high school seniors for their careers. Seventy-five students have graduated from the program in the past three years. Twenty-five new students will begin the program in September.—–—BRADFORD — Sarah Dailey, a sport and recreation management major from Butler, was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, National College Athlete Honor Society, at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

—–—JACKSON TWP — Danielle Matz has been offered a National Merit Michigan State University Scholarship.She is a 2017 graduate of Seneca Valley High School and was the salutatorian of the graduating class.Michigan State chose Matz from among the 2017 National Merit Scholarship finalists.—–—A group of Butler High School seniors received 2017 Ethan Linnon scholarships as proceeds from the Ethan Linnon Memorial 5K Run/Walk.The following graduates received $1,000 each: Lexi Blum, Taylor Jackson, Kayla Lenhart, Sarah Koch, Molly Calvert, Hanna Sheaffer, Julianna DiPippa, Colleen O'Neil, Alexis Leech, Morgan Keelan, Grace Geibel, Nicole Fry, Alec Bayer, Christopher Martin and Luke Walker.
