Zelie Rotary Club gives scholarships

6 SV graduates selected

ZELIENOPLE — Five graduating Seneca Valley High School seniors with a passion for community service will get a little extra help paying for their post-secondary education.

The Zelienople Rotary Club recently awarded its annual scholarships. A sixth scholarship is also provided to a graduating senior who demonstrates a strong interest in journalism.

All scholarships are worth $1,500.

This year's recipients are: Hollen Alexa Davinsizer, Amber Lynne Gorog, Thomas D. George, Brock Daniel Gresock, Kaileen Elizabeth Ryan and Chloe Ross Ruffennach.

Amber, Thomas and Brock are the three recipients of the Rotary scholarships, given for displaying a spirit of community volunteerism.

All six recipients will be honored at the Zelienople Fourth of July Parade and at a Rotary event in July.

Hollen, the daughter of Steven and Lisa Davinsizer of Harmony, is the recipient of the Tullio “Doc” Viola Scholarship, given for outstanding community service and volunteerism. The award is named in memory of Tullio “Doc” Viola, a longtime member of the Zelienople Rotary.

She has been active with Hosanna Industries, helping to renovate homes for the underprivileged, and Feed My Sheep, providing meals, snacks and blankets for the homeless. She has also volunteered with the Light of Life Ministry and Children's Hospital.

She plans to attend Gannon University and has been accepted into the school's physician assistant's program.

Amber, the daughter of Peter and Lorraine Gorog of Harmony, sings with her church youth ministry band and performs at senior citizen homes. In addition, she serves as a youth ministry leader at her church.

Throughout high school she has participated in the all-school musicals and Madrigals. This year she was selected to participate in the state chorus.

She plans to attend Duquesne University and is considering a career in musical therapy.

Thomas, the son of Donn and Doreen George of Zelienople, is also a vocalist and plays bluegrass music in his family's band.

One of his volunteer activities is raising money for the Blue Grass Relief Fund. He also volunteers with “A Night to Remember,” a prom event for special needs young adults.

Thomas plans to attend Clarion University and will major in business and finance.

Brock is the son of Daniel and Rhonda Gresock of Zelienople. His community service work includes being a member of the Boy Scouts, Friends of The Park, working at The Strand, serving as an AAU Basketball coach and volunteering with a veterans group and at his church.

Brock plans to major in finance and accounting at West Virginia University.

Kaileen, the daughter of Martin Ryan and Kathleen Bogue of Zelienople, is the recipient of the Zelienople Rotary Vocational Scholarship.

She plans to study baking and pastry arts at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.

During high school, Kaileen volunteered her time with the Miracle League, helping to provide disabled children with summer activities, and served as a cheer coach for young girls.

Chloe, the daughter of Charles and Kerri Ruffennach of Cranberry Township, is the recipient of the Maureen Lutz Journalism Scholarship.

She was a staff writer for the school newspaper for three years and plans to study journalism in college.
