Robbery charges filed after man points shotgun at tow truck driver

MIDDLESEX TWP — A man who didn't want his Chevy pickup to be repossessed pointed a shotgun at the tow truck driver who was trying to take the vehicle, authorities said.

But the suspect, 52-year-old Brian A. Shaffer, wasn't finished.

He allegedly forced the 2005 pickup off the tow truck lift and drove away into woods near his home on Steiner Bridge Road, according to Middlesex Township police. No one was injured.

Police on Thursday arrested Shaffer after he turned himself in on a warrant in connection with last week's incident.

He is facing eight charges, including three felonies, and is in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.

Middlesex Patrolman Bryan Costanzo responded to Shaffer's home after the tow truck driver, Kevin McMaster, who works for A & L Repossession of Pittsburgh, reported the confrontation about 8 a.m. May 25.

McMaster told the officer that he went there with an online bank's repossession order and got the defendant's pickup ready to move.

The vehicle was loaded and strapped in on the tow truck, he recounted, when Shaffer came out with his shotgun.
