BUTLER TWP — Talk about a surprise package.

Butler High School junior golfer Hannah Folk recently learned she's been named a High School All-American.

She's unsure of why or how — or even who nominated her for the honor.

“I walked into home room to begin school one day and (athletic director) Bill Mylan handed me the certificate,” Folk said. “I didn't know what was going on,

“Obviously, I'm thrilled and honored. It's great to be recognized like that. But I still don't know who nominated me.”

Folk received the honor through the Esmark Inc., High School All-American Recognition Program. Esmark is a national company involved in youth sports development.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler quarterback Mike Tomczak is president of the All-American program, which divides the country into five regions and recognizes student-athletes in 16 different sports, based on athletic and academic performance and community involvement.

Folk was the Golden Tornado's top female golfer last season, averaging in the high 30s for nine holes. She is ranked 13th in her class with a 4.35 grade point average and plans to go into the medical field.

“I'm working as a receptionist for a doctor's office now,” she said. “I measure patients' vitals sometimes.”

When she's not working, she's playing golf much of the time.

A golfer since age 10, Folk is part of a golfing family. Her older brother, Zach, is a senior on the Saint Vincent College golf team.

“My sister, two brothers, mom and dad ... we all play,” Folk said. “We're always hitting balls around the yard, having fun.

“My dream is to get a golf scholarship for college. I've been working toward that.”

The All-American honor will help. Along with the certificate, Folk receives a free evaluation by the National Collegiate Scouting Association.

Esmark All-American determinations are made through a panel of judges who review numerous resumes' and videos. Nominations generally come from coaches, principals, athletic directors or other school officials.

The program has been in place since 2013.

“We're extremely proud of Hannah,” Greg Folk said of his daughter. “She's the only one from Butler to receive this honor, as far as we know.

“I know how hard she works on her game.”

Folk shot an 86 for 18 holes in the WPIAL Class AAA team playoffs last fall, helping Butler reach the team finals.

She will continue to work on it this summer as Folk plans to play on the Tri-State PGA Junior Tour.

“That will give her more exposure,” her father said.

“My putting could improve,” Folk said. “I like my irons. I hit the greens pretty regularly.”

Sarah Zediker, Butler's girls golf coach, will attest to that.”

“Hannah is a very consistent golfer,” Zediker said. “On a par-5 hole, she's on the green in three. On a par-4, she's on in two.

Her drives are 180 to 200 yards off the tee and she putts well. There's really no weakness to her game. I know her goal is to get a scholarship and I think she can get there.”
