Butler's Leech snares 3 medals

SHIPPENSBURG — It was quite the parting shot.

Butler senior Alexis Leech ended her athletic career with Butler High School Saturday by bringing home three medals from the PIAA Track and Field Championships.

“She's headed to Pitt now ... and what a send-off,” Butler girls track coach John Williams said.

Leech placed fifth in the Class AAA 400 meters with a time of 56.68 seconds. She anchored the 4x400 meter relay team that placed fourth with a time of 3:51.80.

She also ran a leg of the Golden Tornado's 4x800 relay unit, which placed sixth in 9:16.76. Both relays broke school records.

“That 400-meter race was loaded, some of the fastest runners in the eastern part of the country,” Williams said. “Alexis showed she's one of them.

“She saw (Butler graduate) Emily Horstman come home with two state medals last year. Alexis was determined to come home with three.”

Of course, she had some help.

Shana Hoy, Liz Simms and Maddie Tonini joined her in the 4x400 relay that produced the second fastest time ever by a WPIAL school in that event.

Joining Leech in the 4x800 relay were Simms, Erin Lemay and Maggie Welty.

Butler's Jena Reinheimer placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 135 feet, nine inches.

“All of our girls were incredible. They did so well,” assistant coach Mike Seybert said. “They went out there and competed hard with the big dogs.”

On the boys side, Butler's Noah Beveridge placed fifth in the 3,200 meters and shattered the school record in the process. He ran a 9:07.26.

The previous Butler record was 9:17.09, set by Evan Gomez in 2011.

Beveridge also placed fifth in the PIAA cross country meet last fall.

“He ran the perfect race,” Butler distance coach Rick Davanzati said. “Noah paced himself early, stayed with the pack and had a strong finishing kick. He ran the last 800 meters in 2:11.

“This is a kid who came down with mono at the end of the indoor season. We had to start him off slow in the spring. He did a fantastic job.”

Butler's Taylor Weaver placed seventh in the girls pole vault at 11 feet, six inches on Friday. She is headed to St. Francis University in the fall.
