Area athletes shine at state track meet

The Butler High School girls 4x800 relay team finished in sixth place at the PIAA State Track and Field championships at Shippensburg University on Saturday.

The team comprised of Alexis Leech, Erin LeMay, Maggie Welty and Liz Simms finished with a time of 9:16.76, setting a new school record in the process. North Penn finishes first with a time of 9:02.65.

Leech also finished in fifth place in the finals for the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.68 seconds. North Penn's Uche Nwogwugwu claimed first place with a time of 53.80.

In the girls 800-meter run in Class AA, Freeport's Sidney Shemanski took fifth place with a time of 2:18.93.

In Class AAA in the same event, Simms placed 12th with a time of 2:16.33.

In the boys' 800-meter run in Class AA, Freeport's Robert Reichenbaugh finished first in the state with a time of 1:55.12.

The Butler girls 4x400 relay team finished fourth with a 3:51.8, beating old record of 3:53.05, by over one second.
