2 boys accused of throwing rocks onto I-79

MUDDY CREEK TWP — Two boys are accused of throwing rocks from an overpass along Interstate 79 last week.

At least two vehicles were hit, state police said, including one that was badly damaged. No one apparently was injured.

The names of the boys — a 14-year-old from Prospect and a 13-year-old from Butler — aren't being released because of their ages.

The youths are both charged in Butler County juvenile court, police said, with propulsion of missiles into an occupied vehicle or onto a road, a misdemeanor.

Authorities allege the boys on the afternoons of Friday and Saturday threw rocks off the Sawyer Road overpass onto southbound vehicles driving on I-79 below.

On at least one of those days, police said this morning, the young suspects were reportedly seen “on bicycles, eating ice cream cones and throwing rocks onto I-79.”

A police news release Wednesday identified a Pittsburgh couple whose vehicle was struck, causing estimated damages “in the thousands of dollars.”

The investigating trooper was unavailable this morning and it was not immediately known what led police to the boys.
