Dalton grabs hurdle crowns

Slippery Rock High School senior hurdler Brady Dalton won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles Saturday during the District 10 Track and Field Championships. Dalton is the only Slippery Rock athlete to advance to this weekend's PIAA meet.

GENEVA, Ohio — Not even a nasty stomach bug and a tight hamstring could slow Brady Dalton down.

Two weeks ago, the senior on the Slippery Rock High girls track and field team was battling both and worried the ailments might affect her chance to bring home district gold and advance to the PIAA Track and Field Championships.

“It worried me,” Dalton said. “But I didn’t want to stress about it.”

Dalton took a few days off, chalking up her balky hamstring to dehydration.

Once she hit the track again, she said she knew everything was going to be fine.

She proved that Saturday at the District 10 Class AAA Track and Field Championships at SPIRE Institute, winning both the 100-meter and the 300-meter hurdle titles.

Dalton finished the 100 hurdle race with a time of 15.44 seconds. She ran a season-best time of 45.97 in the 300 hurdles.

“I was pretty excited,” Dalton said. “I was hoping I was going to win and go to state in both, but nothing is automatic. I just went in thinking I just have to leave it all out there. This is my last district race.

“I didn’t want to go there and not perform well,” she added.

Dalton said the wind slowed her down in the 100. Still, she was only .18 seconds off her best time this season.

“It was a still a pretty good time,” she said.

She was more pleased about breaking 46 seconds in the 300.

“It was my first FAT time in the 45s,” Dalton said. “I was really excited about that. I’m really blessed.”

Dalton is the only representative from Slippery Rock going to the state meet.

Macy McCall narrowly missed advancing, finishing second in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, 3¼ inches.

Grove City will send several athletes to the state meet.

Molek Walker qualified in two events, winning the Class AAA 400 with a time of 50.13 and finishing second in the 200 with a time of 22.24.

His time in the 200 met the state qualifying standard.

The Grove City 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams also advanced.

The 1,600 team of Jacob Hughes, Nick Murawski, Jacob Powell and Jonah Powell finished with a time of 3 minutes, 27.66 seconds to place first.

The 3,200 team of Jonah Powell, Jacob Hughes, Jacob Powell and Braydon Pyle also won a district title with a season-best time of 8:09.19.

Kameron Patterson is also a champion in the javelin with a toss of 163 feet, 7 inches.

Isaac Hefner also qualified for the state meet in the discus with a throw of 153-7.

On the girls side, Abby Biddle placed second in the Class AA 800 with a season-best time of 2:22.35.
