Man hurt when car strikes cow

OAKLAND TWP — A man was injured and a runaway cow killed in a traffic accident Sunday night on Route 38.

The man, whose name was not available, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with injuries, including facial cuts that authorities described as “minor.”

State police were called to investigate but an accident report was not available this morning.

The man, believed to be in his mid-50s, was on his way home from work about 11:40 p.m. when his Dodge Neon traveling north on Route 38 just north of Randy and Bob’s Carstar struck the beef cow. The adult bovine, which apparently escaped from a nearby farm, ended up in the middle of the road, said Paul Patten, assistant chief for the Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

“It was a very large cow,” Patten said.”

The car sustained moderate damage and had to be towed. The driver, who called 911 after the accident, was wearing his seat belt and the air bag deployed.

An East Butler Ambulance crew tended to the man before he was taken to the hospital.

The owner of the cow removed the carcass from the road.

The East Butler Volunteer Fire Department also assisted, authorities said. Emergency crews were back at their stations shortly after 12:30 a.m. today.
