Zelienople man avoids trial, pleads guilty for failure to register as a sex offender

A day before his scheduled trial, a man charged with failing to register as a sex offender with the state police entered a guilty plea in Butler County Court on Monday.

James M. Leiby, 40, of Zelienople pleaded guilty to felony failure to register with the police before county Judge William Shaffer.

Leiby, who is a 15-year Megan’s Law registrant from a 2003 conviction of felony statutory sexual assault, failed to register his address change with the state police on Oct. 11, 2016, according to information delivered to the court by the prosecution.

The plea agreement calls for a sentence of 12 months minus one day to 24 months minus two days in the Butler County Prison. He will be sentenced later.

Leiby has been held in the Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail since Dec. 23.
