Eagle carrier helps save woman's life

A Butler Eagle newspaper carrier helped save the life of an elderly customer on Wednesday.

“It was just the right place at the right time,” said Michelle Digiacomo, who has been delivering daughter Rachel’s paper route recently.

Digiacomo said as she was putting Wednesday’s paper on the porch of a customer on Jefferson Street around 3:15 p.m., she noticed legs in a hallway through the front door.

She said she knew something was wrong so she called the main office to get the customer’s name. Once received, she started pounding on the door and calling her name.

When no response came, she called 911 and emergency crews arrived.

While no medical confirmation could be made Friday, Digiacomo said family members the following day informed her the woman, who lives alone, suffered a stroke.

She said as a carrier, she feels a responsibility to look out for community members.

“We are more than just carriers,” Digiacomo said. “We look out for these people. Many of our customers are disabled or elderly, so we are just looking out for the Joneses.”
