Walk restored hope

This year was the fourth year for the Walk of Hope. Despite the weather, it was amazing the number of people that showed up for the walk. I want to thank everyone that was involved this year by participating and making a statement about the devastation of drugs in our community. Special thanks to Hope for the Broken Hearted Support Group, Woodmen of the World, Pastors John Pistorius, Bob Hurd and Steve Cort. Also, Westminster Church for allowing use of their facilities.

As the impact of drugs continues to worsen, it is interesting to consider who did not come to the walk. A lot of money is made off drugs, some on the street but more is made by the system. Very few from the system were there. This may help to explain why our drug problem continues to get worse.

Until our community comes together, this includes our pastors, community leaders and yes, even our judges and attorneys, this problem will not be solved. Laws need changed, there has to be accountability in the system.

Every person needs to look at their own area of responsibility and ask themselves what they personally can do to fight this battle. What can be changed in the system? The choice is to continue as we have been and watch as the dying get younger and younger.

Prevention is a major factor, which seems to get no support. It is discouraging to see the lack of support for the “Stand Tall” drug and alcohol prevention program in our schools.

There are a lot of hurting people out there. Please do your part to turn this around.
