CWNC advances with 3-0 shutout

Tyler Elwood singled home two runs in the top of the second inning and Joe Alampi cruised to the win on the mound as the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic baseball team advanced in the WPIAL 2A playoffs with a 3-0 win Tuesday afternoon over Chartiers-Houston.

Elwood also drove in a run in the sixth inning to pad the lead.

The Trojans (12-9) will move on to face Serra Catholic in the second round of the playoffs Monday at a site and time to be determined.

Ringgold 7, Freeport 0 — Ringgold opened up a close game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to eliminate the Yellowjackets from the WPIAL 4A playoffs.

The game was scoreless after three innings and Freeport trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth.

Ringgold added a run in the top of the seventh.

James Flemm got the loss for Freeport on the mound. He started out strong, retiring the first six batters he faced.

The Yellowjackets finished the season 12-8.

Karns City 14, Union 0 — Eric Dodd struck out nine over six innings and the Gremlins drew 12 walks in a KSAC win.

Marcus Lantz drove in three runs for Karns City (13-5).

Lucas Bowser had a pair of hits for Union.

Boys Lacrosse

Zach Boldy scored with 21 seconds remaining to send Knoch on in the 2A playoffs with an 11-10 win over South Fayette.

Ivan Stapchuck scored five goals and Andrew Mullen added three for the Knights (9-5), who will travel to Mars to take on the Planets in the next round Thursday at 8 p.m.

Chartiers Valley 10, Freeport 9 — Evan Schaffhauser scored five goals, but the Yellowjackets fell in overtime and were eliminated from the 2A playoffs.

The Yellowjackets rallied from five goals down to tie the game at 8-8 midway through the fourth quarter.

Chartiers Valley took a 9-8 lead, but Sean Fennel scored the tying goal with 26 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Braith Kiser also scored two goals for Freeport.

Mt. Lebanon 14, Butler 1 — The Golden Tornado were eliminated from the 3A playoffs and finished the season 9-8.

Softball

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (11-6) was eliminated from the 2A playoffs with an 18-3 loss to Shenango.

Volleyball

Nash Bryan had 27 kills, but Butler lost a 2-0 lead and the match against Upper St. Clair 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 21-25, 14-16 in the first round of the WPIAL 3A playoffs.

Injuries sabotaged the Golden Tornado, who lost two key players during the match.

Tyler Rankin had 47 assists for the Golden Tornado.

South Park 3, Mars 0 — The Planets were swept in a 2A first-round match.

It was Mars’ first year as a varsity program.
