Moniteau machine still revving

There are good teams, there are great teams.

Then there are teams that are off the charts. Consider Moniteau girls softball to be in that category.

To do what this team has done over the past few years — and particularly this season — is downright crazy.

The seniors on Moniteau’s roster — Kennedy and Kristina DeMatteis, Gabby Stewart, Cortney Claypoole, Kierra Thiry, Makayla King, Bailey Hoffman and Sara Hull — have been part of a program that’s won 81 of 86 games over the past four years.

This year, Moniteau is 17-0 with 12 shutouts. The Warriors have blanked their past seven opponents in a row, outscoring them 94-0 along the way.

Such a streak shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Before bowing 9-3 to Holy Redeemer in the state championship game a year ago, Moniteau had shut out 11 straight opponents while scoring 110 runs itself.

This isn’t a team.

It’s a machine.

Both DeMatteis girls, Claypoole, Stewart and Hull earned Class AA all-state recognition last season. Similar honors are certain to come this year as well.

Kennedy DeMatteis has a microscopic 0.41 earned run average this season. Opposing hitters are batting .107 against her as she’s given up just 28 hits in 68 innings.

DeMatteis has compiled 112 strikeouts — an average of nearly two per inning.

Her twin sister, Kristina — is her catcher. All she’s doing is hitting .564 with 22 of her 31 hits going for extra bases. That includes 10 home runs and nine doubles.

Kristina isn’t even among the top two hitters on her team. Stewart is hitting .600 with seven triples while Claypoole is hitting .604.

Stewart and Claypoole, by the way, are a combined 36 for 36 in stolen base attempts this year. As a team, Moniteau has swiped 63 of an attempted 64 bags.

The numbers go on and on with this team.

The Warriors’ team batting average is .456. Kennedy DeMatteis is hitting an even .500 while Megan Hepler is hitting .462.

And softball is not the only athletic success being realized these days at that school.

Moniteau’s boys and girls track teams both have a chance to win team titles at the District 9 meet this Friday at Kane. The Warrior boys recently capped an undefeated regular season.

The baseball team has a legitimate shot at a district title as well. The Warriors will face Karns City in a one-game district showdown after the teams split two games in the regular season.

Moniteau could conceivably pull in four District 9 championship banners this spring. That would comprise all of the spring sports offered by the school.

Softball leads the way. When this senior group graduates, it will leave behind the legend of a dynasty.

One that is, well, off the charts.
