Butler blanks Ellwood City in season finale

Cade Negley doubled and drove in four runs and Connor Ollio struck out six in three innings of work to get the win as Butler blanked Ellwood City 10-0 in six innings in the regular-season finale Thursday night.

The Golden Tornado scored five runs in the bottom of the second and five more in the bottom of the sixth.

Sam Gross also doubled for Butler (14-6), which will open the WPIAL 6A playoffs next week.

Softball

Kristina DeMatteis had a pair of doubles and Gabby Stewart had three hits, including a double, as Moniteau routed A-C Valley 17-0.

Kennedy DeMatteis got the win, striking out five in four innings.

Dolcey Shunk added three hits and scored three runs.

Moniteau was scheduled to host Ellwood City, which received a first-round bye in the WPIAL 3-A playoffs, but the game was postponed by rain.

Track and Field

Grove City's Molek Walker broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 48.90 seconds to place second at the Mercer County Invitational at Forker Field in Grove City.

Walker also placed second in the 100 dash.

Jonah Powell finished first for the Eagles in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 28.62 seconds.

Luke Owrey also won the 3,200-meter run for Grove City (10:19.45).

Grove City also won the 1,600-meter relay with the team of Jacob Hughes, Nick Murawski, Jacob Powell and Jonah Powell and also placed first in the 3,200-meter relay with Hughes, Jacob and Jonah Powell and Braydon Pyle.

On the girls side, Slippery Rock's Brady Dalton won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.52.

Her teammates, Macy McCall and Sierra Nagy finished third and fourth for the Rockets.

Dalton also placed second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.39.

Nagy was also second in the long jump with a 16-4 effort.

Grove City's Abby Biddle placed second in the 400 with a time of 1:00.09 and the 800 with a time of 2:22.46.

Ann Schmid was second in the javelin for the Eagles with a throw of 117-1.
