District might add bowling club

BUFFALO TWP — Freeport students may be knocking down pins next school year.

A proposed Freeport bowling club is on the agenda for the school board meeting Wednesday.

The independent club would use the high school name and district logo, but the district would not have any costs or liabilities connected with the program.

However, the board would approve the coaches as it does with sanctioned sports.

New doors

The school board also will consider $24,575 for the A.G. Mauro Company to replace doors at the high school science wing and weight room entrances.

Those entrances would be the latest in a series being replaced by the company. The work, which includes installation, would be paid from the capital projects fund.

Textbook tussle

The school board also is considering buying new textbooks for the foreign language department at a cost not to exceed $20,000.

Board member Christine Davies, a Spanish teacher in the South Butler School District, opposed the expenditure, saying it's unnecessary.

“It's the same material,” she said.

Superintendent Ian Magness confirmed the purchase would include access to online material for students.

Davies was not swayed, stressing the key to learning a foreign language is using it.

“Push the speaking,” she said. “They don't need the Internet to do this. They need to use the language every day.”

Magness pointed out the current textbooks are 15 years old. He said the department has been asking for new textbooks for the past five years, but he deferred it until now.

Board member Frank Prazenica, a retired superintendent for West Mifflin School District and a former interim superintendent for multiple districts, said he would compare the new ones with the current ones.

Prazenica said the new books have a 2018 copyright, so they would not become outdated for awhile.
