Planets' freshman wins 3,200

SR's McCall also a winner at Mars Invite in triple jump

ADAMS TWP — Zach Leachman hopes to accomplish many things at the Mars Athletic Complex during his varsity track career.

But the Planet freshman isn't easing into success.

He won the 3,200-meter run at the Mars Invite Friday, finishing in a school-record time of 9 minutes, 45.69 seconds.

Leachman also won the event at the Midwestern Athletic Conference meet here Wednesday, earning Track MVP honors in the process.

“Earlier this season, he ran a 9:52 to break a record that was 25 years old,” said Mars distance coach Denny Clark. “He was really good in junior high and that's when we noticed his potential.”

Leachman doesn't take his two victories in three days for granted.

“I'm coming out here against some kids who are three years older than me and still winning,” he said. “It feels great.”

Clark knows of the mental aspect of distance running and makes sure Leachman remains focused.

“Before each race, we talk to him about the thought process and what he wants to do,” he said. “We don't want him going to the starting line with an empty head.”

His freshman campaign has been a great one so far, but Leachman hopes to close the season in style.

“My goal is to get my time down to where it's good enough for states. That's about 9:30,” he said.

Mars also earned a win in the final event of the invite, the 4x400 relay.

The team of Chris Check, Trent Williams, Justin Petrilena and Jimmy Hibbard came in at 3:29.02. The same foursome placed fifth at the Butler Invitational last week with a time of 3:32.32.

Slippery Rock junior Macy McCall used Friday's meet to redeem herself in the girls triple jump.

“Last week (at the Hermitage Invite), I struggled getting to 32 feet, which is pretty bad,” said McCall, who jumped 35-1¾ here to place first.

“My best is a 35-4 and now that I've got my confidence back, I'm hoping to get to 36 or 37 by the end of the season,” she added. “It's just some technical things I am working on.”
