Driver crashes into mailboxes

Police suspect alcohol as factor

JEFFERSON TWP — A car ended up in woods with three flat tires after mowing down several mailboxes Thursday night when its driver lost control of it on Saxonburg Road.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, escaped serious injury but her small sedan is likely beyond repair. Alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash shortly before 9 p.m., authorities aid.

State police are investigating but an accident report was not available this morning.

The woman had apparently left work and was traveling northbound in the 600 block of Saxonburg Road when her car crossed over the opposing lane and went off the road just before the Summit Presbyterian Church.

“She was pinballing off mailboxes for about a quarter-mile stretch,” said Chief Chris Ballina of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company. “There was debris everywhere.”

In all, the car ran over five mailboxes.

The vehicle didn't stop until it was in the woods about 10 feet off the road, emergency crews said. Only one tire survived in tact.

A Saxonburg Ambulance crew checked out the woman, who reportedly reeked of alcohol. While police escorted her to a patrol car, authorities said, she fell onto her face.

A flatbed tow truck driver eventually got there and used a cable to pull the badly damaged car out of the woods.
