Growing pains for Tornado

Girls lacrosse falls to Rams, 17-3

BUTLER TWP — Ashley Argyros prefers to look at the positives this season.

Her Butler girls lacrosse team is young and came into the season with little experience.

Baby steps.

“The goal every time is to not look at the negatives,” Argyros said. “I like for the girls to say, ‘This is what we did well and this is what we need to work on.’ I don’t want to focus on the negatives per se because that will just harbor bad feelings.”

There were some positives for the Golden Tornado Wednesday night, just not enough of them in a 17-3 loss to Pine-Richland.

Butler (2-9) did jump out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Eliza Drohan less than a minute in.

But that lead was short-lived as the Rams (10-3) scored four goals in less than a minute to seize control.

The bugaboo for the Tornado was on the draw. Pine-Richland won nearly every one and Butler rarely possessed the ball.

“I have a young team,” Argyros said. “I graduated 12 seniors and most of them started for me last year and we moved up to a stronger section this year. I’d rather play in a section like this with more competition.”

Pine-Richland has been exceptional on the draw this season and showed that off Wednesday.

The Rams also were patient on offense and converted on nearly every opportunity.

“We have some skilled centers who have had a lot of experience and have good wrist action,” said Pine-Richland coach Brittany Adams. “It really helps. That’s a strength of ours and when it doesn’t go our way, the score reflects that.”

The Rams had eight players score at least one goal and were led by Marina Miller, who scored five.

“We really try to emphasize the versatility,” Adams said. “We have more than two girls who can put goals on the board for us. If they have the look and it’s the right look, they have the capability of finishing.”

Haley Knass scored a pair of goals for Butler.

The Golden Tornado have been competitive this season and Argyros said she has seen the development all season.

“Definitely the second half of the season has been better,” Argyros said. “It’s just been experience and getting to know one another. Most of the girls weren’t used to playing with each other. It’s coming together slowly.

“It’s going to take time,” Argyros added. “It’s going to take a couple of years, but I can see the girls getting to (Pine-Richland’s) level. It’s just going to take effort and hard work.”
