Monday — Police charged a Butler County trio in connection with a shoplifting and fraudulent return incident last month at the Butler Commons' Wal-Mart.

Accused are Marina S. Zellonis, 46, of Bruin; George C. Early, 47, of Venango Township; and Aaron S. Wiemelt, 47, of Venango Township. Police said the alleged crime was captured on the store's surveillance video.

According to court documents, Zellonis on March 12 shoplifted a carpet cleaner and mattress topper valued at a combined $262.88. She allegedly left the store with the unpaid merchandise in a shopping cart.

Zellonis a short time later re-entered the store with Wiemelt, who police said was pushing the cart and merchandise she had taken. The pair went to the customer service desk to return the items. The store would not accept the carpet cleaner, which Zellonis placed back into the cart.

The store also initially denied the return of the mattress topper because Wiemelt tried to use an expired driver's license as his identification. Police said he left but soon was back, this time with Early, who used his license to complete the fraudulent return of the mattress topper.

The store presented Early with a Wal-Mart gift card worth $104.94, documents said.

The surveillance video showed the trio leave the store, with Zellonis pushing out the carpet cleaner, and drive away in a sport utility vehicle.

Charging documents noted that Zellonis has five prior shoplifting convictions and Early has one prior shoplifting conviction.

Zellonis is charged with felony counts of retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft, and a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit theft by deception.

Early is charged with a felony count of retail theft and misdemeanor counts of theft by deception and conspiracy to commit theft by deception.

Wiemelt is charged with a felony count of conspiracy commit retail theft and a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit theft by deception.
