Fireworks fizzle for Memorial Day

Event at lake is postponed

WORTH TWP — Those wanting to see an annual fireworks show at Cooper’s Lake this year may want to rethink their plans.

The LionFire Festival and fireworks show planned for Memorial Day weekend has been postponed, according to an email from Cooper’s Lake to customers sent Monday.

“We are truly upset for our customers and the event itself,” the email states. “At this time, we are unsure of when the event will be rescheduled to.”

The LionFire Festival, hosted by Pittsburgh-based LionHeart Event Group, was set to replace PyroFest as the premier Memorial Day fireworks show after PyroFest announced on its website in November that it would not return for this year’s festivities.

Pyrofest’s website states it is “not possible” to provide a performance up to the show’s standards.

“Our goal with PyroFest has always been to make it an international showcase of the fireworks arts, ultimately creating ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ with our audience,” the website’s statement says.

PyroFest was in its third year of a five-year contract with Cooper’s Lake for the fireworks show.

The cause of the cancellation was a split between executives at New Castle-based Pyrotecnico and Lionheart Event Group (formerly Peony Entertainment), the companies that provided the fireworks for PyroFest, said Jack Cohen, president of the Butler County Tourism Bureau.

The tourism bureau aided with marketing the annual event for Cooper’s Lake Campground.

LionHeart Event Group was a subsidiary of Pyrotecnico before it split into its own company in January.

It is unknown at this time if the contract between the companies and Cooper’s Lake has become null and void or if Cooper’s Lake will seek any legal action.

Total revenue losses for the company could amount to between $300,000 and $400,000, Cohen said.

“They would buy lumber, have security and have food vendors,” Cohen said. “You look at all the income they would have generated to any of the people who do these things, it’s pretty tough. All the incremental business from those type of events is gone.”

“People are bummed out,” he added. “We would rather have it held here.”

The Lionfire Festival was to have 10 fireworks displays and a fireworks competition featuring three divisions: consumer, club and professional.

Cooper’s Lake Campgrounds will be open to anyone who still wishes to camp over the holiday weekend. Several family style activities are in the works for Saturday including a children’s fair, a free BBQ dinner in the evening and a bonfire. A full list of activities will be available soon. Cooper’s Lake, however, is offering refunds for those who do not wish to camp there under these circumstances.

Officials from Pyrotecnico, LionHeart Event Group or Cooper’s Lake did not return requests for comment.

Pyrofest’s statement on its website says the festival plans to return sometime in the future.

“We take great pride in having become an annual tradition for people across the country,” Pyrofest’s statement says. “This isn’t goodbye, but rather see you later.”
