Stamp to commemorate celebration

This year at the Mars New Year festival, stamp collectors and Mars Borough devotees will have the chance to purchase a piece of collectible post office memorabilia.

The second annual Mars New Year will feature a special stamp canceled by the local post office. The image that will be featured on the stamp has yet to be decided.

“I just met with the post office, and we’re hoping to get a new canceled stamp but if not then we’ll go with the old one,” said Mars Mayor Gregg Hartung. “It’s a collector’s item.”

The post office will be responsible for printing and preparing them for purchase.

Each stamp will be available for $1.

The Mars New Year festival logo, featured on the stamp, was developed with the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau. It served as both the logo and stamp in the first Mars New Year Festival in 2015.

The idea originally came from local Mars stamp collector Mac Purvis.

“He came to us with the idea, and we said we’d meet with the post office,” Hartung said.

“In addition to the stamps, the post office will have a big post office truck at the event,” Hartung said.

There also will be a flying saucer at the post office. Refreshments will be available.

All the money raised by the event, including from sales of the stamps, goes to paying for the costs incurred, Hartung said. “Any extra will go to our Mars revitalization program, which is our downtown revitalization project.”

Because the festival will be doubled in size this year, the town hopes the money it brings in increases accordingly.
