Unbeaten Moniteau softball rolls, 15-5

Sophomore Madison Fitzgerald went 3-for-4 with two RBI in her first varsity game as the Moniteau softball team (11-0) downed Neshannock 15-5 Saturday afternoon.

Gabby Stewart also had a big day for the Warriors, going 3-for-4 with four RBI. She also swiped three bases.

Cortney Claypoole drove in three runs and Kristina DeMatteis collected a pair of RBI.

Kennedy DeMatteis got the win, striking out five. She also had a pair of hits.

Pine-Richland 11, Butler 9 — Julia Gibson, Autumn Pettinato and Addie Burke all went 3-for-5, but the Golden Tornado fell to the Rams.

Gibson and Pettinato each had a double. Pettinato and Burke each drove in two runs.

Kat Rudolph went 2-for-3 with a RBI for the Golden Tornado.

Baseball

Dylan Rotz doubled, singled and drove in two runs as Mars toppled section foe Hampton.

Jack Anderson also had a two-run double for the Planets (6-4, 5-1).

Frank Craska got the win on the mound.

Freeport 4, Knoch 1 — Matt Charlton hit a two-run homer and James Flemm pitched six strong innings to lead the Yellowjackets over the Knights in this game from Friday.

Mike McCarty had a double and drove in Knoch’s only run.

After a grueling day, the Butler boys volleyball team emerged with a championship at the Plum Tournament.

The Golden Tornado won all three matches in its pool, downing Central Catholic, Steel Valley and Fox Chapel by 2-0 sweeps.

In the next round, Butler beat Bethel Park, but fell to Pine-Richland and Norwin.

The Golden Tornado got new life in the single-set, single-elimination bracket and made the most of it, downing Deer Lakes before avenging an earlier loss to Norwin with a 25-19 win.

In the championship match, Butler beat Bethel Park to win the title.

Senior Matt Slater was a standout for the Golden Tornado. Filling in for a teammate, he had a strong game at the net.

Butler will take on Shaler on the road Tuesday before returning home Thursday for a showdown with Pine-Richland.

Brady Dalton ran a time of 15.26 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles to place first for the Slippery Rock High girls at the Hermitage Invitational.

Dalton was also second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.24.

Macy McCall placed second for the Rockets in the triple jump (32 feet, 10 inches) and Brooke Schaefers was also second in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 30.88 seconds).

McCall also placed fourth in the 100 hurdles.

Dalton and Schaefers ran legs on Slippery Rock’s fourth-place 1,600 relay team that finished in 4:35.55. Haley Carani and Taylor Plunkard were also on the team.

On the boys side, Sean Northcott was second in the javelin with a throw of 146-6 and Hunter Prementine was also runner-up in the triple jump (39-8½).

Prementine also placed sixth in the 110 hurdles.

Moniteau fared well in the meet, also. Dalton Anderson won the boys javelin with a 162-5 and placed second in the high jump with a 5-11. He was fourth in the 110 hurdles. Sophomore James Parenti took fourth in the discus with a personal-best 148-11.

Also placing for the Warriors were Dillin Anderson (seventh) in the javelin, Jake Patton (third) in the 110 hurdles and (fourth) 300 hurdles, Steven Fawcett (fourth) and Emmanuel McLean (fifth) in the 800, the 4x400 relay team of Jake Patton, Wyatt McDeavitt, McLean and Dalton Anderson (fifth) and Roman Davidson (fifth) in the shot oput.

Evan Schaffhauser scored four goals as Freeport downed Fairmont (W.Va.) 15-4.

Corey Schrecengost added three goals and Garret Schaffhauser and Caleb Leyland each added two for the Yellowjackets (6-4).

Noah Freeman stopped nine shots in goal for Freeport.
