Man dies from injuries after fall from bridge

A 58-year-old man died from his injuries after reportedly jumping off a bridge on Route 422 Monday.

SUMMIT TWP — A 58-year-old man died of injuries suffered Monday when he apparently jumped off a highway bridge in the township, authorities said.

State police and emergency crews were called about noon to the Route 422 westbound bridge near the Jefferson Street exit, where a man had reportedly jumped.

The man fell about 40 feet before landing near railroad tracks below, authorities said.

He was injured but conscious when crews initially found him. He later was “in and out” of consciousness, police Lt. Daniel Hines said.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew hopped a ride on a pickup truck fitted to ride the railroad tracks near Ervin Industries to reach the man.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital where he was to be flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was pronounced dead there, authorities said.

Hines said passing motorists reported seeing the man jump. Police were not certain how the man got onto the bridge, but they found a car abandoned on the road near the bridge.
