Man rushed to hospital after fall from bridge

SUMMIT TWP — State police and emergency crews were called shortly after noon to the Route 422 westbound bridge near the Jefferson Street exit, where a man had apparently jumped.

The man, believed to be in his 50s or 60s, landed below on railroad tracks, authorities said.

He was injured and in and out of consciousness, police Lt. Daniel Hines said.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew hopped a ride on a pickup truck fitted to ride the railroad tracks to reach the patient.

He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital where he was to be flown to an unspecified Pittsburgh Trauma Center.

Hines said passing motorists reported seeing the man jump. Police were not certain how the man got onto the bridge, but they found a car abandoned on the road near the bridge.
