Golden Girls

Butler's Alexis Leech was a member of two girls relay teams that captured gold. Leech ran the first leg of the Butler Invitational record-breaking 3,200-meter relay along with Shana Hoy, Maggie Welty and Liz Simms. The Golden Tornado girls won the invitational team title.

BUTLER TWP — A dominating season just got even better for the Butler girls track and field team.

Victories in three events — the 4x800 and 4x400 relays and the pole vault — lifted the Golden Tornado to their second straight team title at the Butler Track and Field Invitational on Friday.

The 4x800 foursome's time (9 minutes, 22.64 seconds) and Taylor Weaver's height of 11 feet, 11 inches in the pole vault both set new meet standards.

“This is a home meet for us and the girls are driven for success,” said Butler coach John Williams.

Erin LeMay is a regular on Butler's 4x800 team, but was on a student government-related trip in Harrisburg. Senior Shana Hoy took her place and turned in a split of 2:26.

It had been two years since Hoy ran an 800, but she had no reservations about holding up her end in the relay.

“I was pretty confident I could do well,” she said. “We're all working hard and pushing each other.”

Hoy and teammates Alexis Leech, Maggie Welty and Liz Simms turned in a time that crushed the invite record in the event (9:26.74 by Villa Maria last year) by more than four seconds.

“Personally, my goal coming in was for us to shatter the record,” said Simms. “The old record was pretty even with our best time this season.”

“They led from start to finish,” said Tornado assistant coach Mike Seybert. “Their time today is the best in the WPIAL and it's probably the fastest time in the state.”

The effort can serve as a springboard into the final weeks of the season.

“We're really excited about it,” Welty said. “This just adds to our confidence.”

“We came up in the state rankings,” added Leech. “Hopefully, we can get to states and place there.”

Weaver had a business-like approach to the pole vault.

“I knew I was seeded first coming into today, but I was also going for the meet record (11-10),” she said. “The school record was 11-9, so I figured I'd break that, too.”

While Knoch's Jordan Geist was outside the stadium hoping for wind at his back during his throws in the discus, Weaver was wishing it would die down.

“It was bad, but I did the best I could with it,” she said.

At the end of the invite, Simms, Hoy and Leech teamed with Maddie Tonini to place first in the 4x400 with a finish of 4:00.15. The effort missed breaking the record by just .95 seconds.

It capped Butler's team championship as the Tornado piled up 76 points. North Allegheny was second with 61.

Butler (7-0) can wrap up the Section 3-AAA title with a win Tuesday at Seneca Valley.

“With a school as big as we are, there's a lot of competition within the team,” said Williams. “And we have a lot of great senior leadership.”
