GROVE CITY — Colin Freyvogel of Butler was co-captain of the Grove City College Debate Team that recently won an overall national championship, as well as several individual ones. The team is one of the most successful teams in college history.

The team secured the national championship at the National Christian College Forensic Invitational in Phoenix at Grand Canyon University, where it competed against the nation's top Christian schools.

That win followed awards and honors at the American Enterprise Institute's annual debate tournament, a competition at Bowling Green State University and the 2016 Chief Justice Invitational.

Pennsylvania State University, Notre Dame, Purdue University, University of Illinois, Pepperdine University, Oberlin College and the University of Kentucky were among the schools in these competitions.

MARS — Mars Area Middle School eighth-grader Chloe Milliron was selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum: Explore STEM program, in July at Loyola University in Chicago.

Milliron, 14, daughter of Ryan and Melissa Milliron of Mars, will join students in sixth through eighth grades from across the country to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers through hands-on simulations, workshops and competitions in computer science, engineering and medicine.

The program also will offer students an opportunity to develop their time management, conflict resolution, information analysis, collaboration and public speaking skills.

MARS — Mars High School sophomore Dustin Bauer took sixth place in the Introduction to Financial Math competition at the 2016-17 Pennsylvania Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference.

The organization helps students enhance their leadership abilities and prepare for entry into and advancement within a business or business-related occupation.

MARS — Mars Area Elementary School recently raised $22,762.08 to benefit the American Heart Association through the school's annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.

As part of the fundraiser, students in second through fourth grades jumped rope during their physical education classes and collected pledges to benefit the association.

Michael Fugh's fourth- grade class brought in the highest amount, Kathryn Haney's second-grade class took second place and Kelli Schiffhauer's second-grade class took third place.

The top individual fund-raisers were fourth-grader Gavin Wagner, fifth-grader Cooper Courson, second-grader Isabella Martini, fourth-grader Julia Nassif,second-grader Reagan Dunn, fourth-grader Alyssa Hipsky and third-grader Jake Golebiewski.

MARS — Mars High School students were inducted into the school's National Honor Society this month.

Inductees include seniors Lindsey Brand, Katie Huggins, Megan Gow and Lauren Titchen.
