6:58 a.m. Sunday — Jacob D. Turner, 37, of Butler was arrested for suspected drunken driving after his sport utility vehicle crashed into a utility pole on the 300 block of West Wayne Street.

The wreck broke the pole, knocking out power for at least three hours to more than 300 customers.

Turner told officers that the crash happened when he swerved to miss a car that pulled out in front of him, according to court documents. He also requested medical treatment for a chipped tooth.

Police said the defendant smelled of alcohol and appeared to be impaired. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. He refused to take a breath test.

An inventory of his badly-damaged vehicle turned up a bag of suspected marijuana, three crack pipes, a used syringe, marijuana grinder and bong, and other contraband, documents said.

Turner is charged with driving under the influence and possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
