6:57 a.m. Sunday — Some 300 homes in the city lost electrical service when a sport utility vehicle crashed into a utility pole in the 300 block of West Wayne Street.

The unknown driver was apparently uninjured. A police report was not available this morning. The Butler Fire Department said the pole was broken in the wreck.

West Penn Power Co. spokeswoman Todd Meyers said 306 customers lost service in the areas of Wayne, Chestnut, Quarry, Main and Washington streets and Negley Avenue.

Power was restored to most customers by 10 a.m., he said, but 46 homes were without electricity until about 3 p.m., when the pole was replaced.

9:32 a.m. Sunday — Earl A. Herbert, 25, of Butler was arrested on a felony shoplifting charge after he was caught allegedly trying to steal a jar of hair-styling gel and a can of Mountain Dew Volt at the Dollar General store on North Main Street. A store employee stopped Herbert, who has two prior shoplifting convictions, with the $5.19 in merchandise in his pockets, according to court documents.

District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned the defendant on a felony count of retail theft. He was placed in the Butler

County Prison on $2,000 bail following arraignment.

April 10 — Donald W. Selfridge, 52, was arraigned on charges he grew marijuana nearly two years ago at his home in Fairview Township.

A “knock and talk” investigation led troopers with the police vice unit to Selfridge’s Butternut Road home on April 29, 2015. He let troopers into his house, police said, which smelled of marijuana.

A consent search subsequently turned up five marijuana plants, each about 2 feet tall, in a back bedroom that was being used as a suspected grow room, according to court documents.

Police said they found in the bathroom several items “associated with the manufacturing of marijuana” and on the kitchen counter a small amount of marijuana as well as marijuana pipes and rolling paper.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Selfridge on a felony charge of manufacturing a controlled substance and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was released on his own recognizance following arraignment.

April 4 — Police obtained a felony arrest warrant for Matthew M. Snow, 34, of Petrolia on charges stemming from an alleged drug deal last year at a parking lot at a bar in Petrolia.

Snow is accused of selling 0.86 grams of cocaine to a police informant for $125 during the deal Dec. 16, 2016, which was set up by cell phone, according to court documents.

He is charged with delivery of a controlled substance, criminal use of a communication facility, both felonies, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

7:45 p.m. Thursday — The state police fire marshal unit is investigating a blaze that gutted a home in Madison Township. The house on Kissinger Mills Road was vacated and being remodeled when it caught fire. The home was ruled a total loss. There were no injuries. Volunteer firefighters from Rimersburg, Sligo, East Brady and Callensburg responded, authorities said.

Damage was estimated at $75,000. The owner did not have insurance. A cause of the fire remains unknown. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 814-226-1710.

[naviga:h2]State Police, Mercer[/naviga:h2]

Friday — Police reported they are investigating a case of suspected sexual assault at the George Junior Republic juvenile detention facility in Pine Township, Mercer County.

A 17-year-old boy allegedly assaulted another 17-year-old boy in an incident between Feb. 24 and March 2. A police news release provided no other information and noted that the investigation is ongoing.

In a separate case, police are investigating a reported indecent assault last month at the facility. Charges to be filed against a 20-year-old man, who was not identified in a police report, are pending in that incident March 2. The man is suspected of exposing himself to a 16-year-old boy.

[naviga:h2]State Police, New Castle[/naviga:h2]

March 31 — Michael Thomas Block, 25, of New Castle was arrested on charges he broke into a home in Scott Township, Lawrence County, and stole an estimated $1,300 worth of property. The break-in at the 43-year-old woman’s house on McCaslin Road happened Feb. 7 or 8.

Block was arraigned on charges of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property. He was released on his own recognizance following arraignment.

Wednesday — The state police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement cited the Eau Claire Street Cafe & Sports Bar in Butler for allegedly violating the state liquor law between Feb. 23 and March 10 by failing to have its board-approved manager complete a Responsible Alcohol Management Program.
