Monday — Police filed another criminal case against John Wayne Thoma, 30, who was arrested last week after trying to make a rooftop getaway at a city apartment.

Thoma, who has no known address, in the latest case is accused of breaking into a home March 27 in the 300 block of North Main Street.

He apparently got into the home, an apartment, after finding the tenant’s hiding spot for her key, according to court documents.

The victim told police that when she returned home, she found the key missing. Moments later, she spotted an unknown man, later identified as Thoma, walking out of the building and carrying a space heater. He put down the heater and fled after being confronted. Police were called and searched for the suspect, to no avail.

Police said by then Thoma was already suspected in several other burglaries. The victim in the March 27 break-in identified Thoma from a photo lineup, documents said.

He is charged in the case with burglary and theft.

Thoma has been in the Butler County Prison since Friday when city police went looking for him on an arrest warrant in connection with another burglary.

Officers found him at an apartment on South Washington Street.

Thoma was arraigned on charges of resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Additionally, he was arraigned on burglary and theft charges stemming from the arrest warrant. In that case, he is accused in the April 2 break-in of an apartment in the 500 block of North Washington Street and stealing video game consoles and other property.

9:57 p.m. Wednesday — Two men were hurt when their pickup truck crashed into a storm gully on West Main Street. The driver, believed to be in his 50s, was backing out of the Dollar General store when the truck wrecked near the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty.

A police report was not immediately available and the names of the driver and his passengers, including a young child, were not known.

Both men in the truck were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with apparent minor injuries. They complained of chest pain that possibly was from their airbags deploying, said Chief Chris Ballina of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company.

The child, believed to be 6 or 7, was not injured.

A tow truck had to pull the truck from the eight- to 10-foot steep gully.
