Burned food suspected cause in evacuation

CRANBERRY TWP — Someone who burned food and tried to cover it up with an air freshener caused an odor that brought about a mass evacuation from a commercial building Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. for a burning smell at Rowan Towers, a six-floor building on Rowan Road that holds a day care, dental office and other businesses. The building was evacuated.

Firefighters from Cranberry, Adams and Marshall townships and Harmony went through the building to find the source of the odor.

Cranberry Township Chief Dave Mack said crews checked each room on each floor with a thermal imaging camera and found nothing. He believes someone burned their food while reheating it and tried to cover up the smell using an air-freshening spray.

The combined odors spread through the building, which has a common air return, Mack said. Everyone was allowed back in the building by 2:20 p.m.
