Butler baseball blanks Penn Hills, 10-0

The Butler baseball team got its offense going Monday night.

The Golden Tornado scored 10 runs and Alec Bayer pitched three shutout innings to lead Butler to a 10-0, five-inning win over Penn Hills.

“It was nice. As the game went along, the kids started to relax and we got some hits,” said Butler coach Todd Erdos. “There was more energy and more confidence.”

Adam Hohn had a single and a double and Cade Negley, Sam Gross and Bayer each drove in two runs for the Golden Tornado (2-1).

Butler will be back in action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Vincentian Academy.

Mars 3, Armstrong 1 — Frank Craska scattered four hits over seven innings and also had a pair of singles as Mars downed Armstrong.

Craska struck out three and walked just one in seven efficient innings to get the win.

Brandon Wetherholt also had a pair of singles for the Planets (2-2, 1-0).

Ricky Mineo got the win, striking out six in 5 2/3 innings for Slippery Rock (2-1).

Freeport 10, Highlands 5 — Matt Charllton went 4-for-4 with two RBI and Tyler Hettrich, James Flemm each went 3-for-4 with home runs to lead the Yellowjackets.

Freeport pounded out 18 hits in the victory.

Sean Furlong picked up the complete-game win for the Yellowjackets.

Softball

Claire Crytzer smashed a pair of home runs as Freeport banged out 22 hits in a 16-5, five-inning win over Valley.

Ashley Schmidt had a pair of singles and two doubles, Ali DeJidas and Kristie Radvan a single and two doubles, Tori Radvan a pair of hits and Rebecca Fennell a single and a double to lead the Yellowjackets’ barrage.

Kristie Radvan picked up the win in the circle for Freeport (4-0). She fanned six and didn’t walk a batter in five innings.

Grant Alexander found the net six times and Dan Rupert added five goals as Seneca Valley rolled to a 16-4 win over Chartiers Valley.

Ryan Greer also scored twice for the Raiders.

Girls Lacrosse

Madison Edkins scored five goals and Liz Hanks stopped 14 shots in goal as Seneca Valley toppled North Hills 13-7.

Hempfield 17, Freeport 7 — Chrissy Conklin scored six goals for the Yellowjackets.

Hannah Bowman also scored a goal for Freeport.

Boys Volleyball

Cody Schnur had 10 kills and Tyler Rankin added 21 assists as Butler remained perfect with a 25-14, 25-23, 26-24 win over Deer Lakes.

Dan Cline also had eight digs for the Golden Tornado (4-0, 3-0).

Tennis

The doubles tandem of Matt McMaster and Nate Errington earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory, but Butler fell to Hampton, 3-2.
