Supervisors OK alcohol for Adams park, with a permit

ADAMS TWP — Those hosting an event in the township park will now be allowed to serve alcohol, with a permit.

Supervisors at their meeting Monday night voted unanimously to approve the permitted use of alcohol in the park’s pavilions. They also voted to approve the fees for rental of the pavilions with alcohol use.

The fee for getting an alcohol permit will be the same as the pavilion rental fee. While part of the pavilion fee is refundable, the alcohol permit fee is not refundable, supervisors said.

The supervisors considered the measure because more and more people have expressed interest in bringing alcohol when renting one of the four pavilions in the 103-acre park on Valencia Road.

Tom Franceschina, the vice chairman of the board of supervisors, said that when crews clean up the pavilions after a rental, many times alcohol containers are visible in the trash.

The supervisors reviewed the ordinances of neighboring communities that allow alcohol in their parks and last month instructed township solicitor Mike Gallagher to look into an ordinance for the supervisors to consider.

The supervisors stressed that alcohol is only allowed in the pavilions through a permit. Those picnicking or pursuing other activities in the park are not permitted to bring or drink alcohol. Supervisors Russ Ford said that rule will be strictly enforced by the township police.

Park places

The park’s largest pavilion, the Rotary Pavilion, seats 112 and has electric service, indoor bathrooms, a fireplace and fire ring. It also has a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, stove, gas grill, refrigerator and sink.

The Township Pavilion seats 84 and has electric, a water spigot, indoor bathrooms and a kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, microwave and gas grill, but no stove. It is next to the playground, tee-ball fields and sand volleyball court.

The Veteran’s Pavilion seats 55 and has electric, indoor bathrooms and a kitchen. It is close to a ballfield and a small playground.

The smallest shelter, the Kiwanis Pavilion, seats 48 and has electric, a water spigot and a portable toilet. It is near a full-sized baseball field.

The park, which the township got when it bought the Karl Wirth farm, opened in 2000.
