Officials see plans for community center

SEVEN FIELDS — Borough council saw potential plans for community center renovations at its meeting Monday.

Ken Shiderly, of Ken Shiderly Construction in New Castle, presented a sketch of a possible exterior renovation, and Donovan Karki, from Quality Stone Veneer in Portersville, showed council members samples of the stone veneer.

The design has stone veneer around the bottom half of the exterior wall and vertical fiber cement siding on the top half. Tom Smith, Seven Fields borough manager, said he also envisioned it having a metal roof. The goal is to create a more timeless look for the community center, he said, which was built in the early 1990s.

Smith said the cost for the exterior work will be $100,000 to $125,000, including the roof.

Renovating the exterior of the community center is planned for early 2018, Smith said. The interior will be done in 2019.

“We just pick a couple projects annually to do community upgrades,” Smith said. “For the community center, it’s time. The pool is probably on the radar in the next five years.”

In January the council approved a new HVAC system and furnace for the community center for $7,600 and a rubberized safety surface for the park playground for $46,110.

Officials may split up the community center renovation into two or three phases to do the exterior, interior and roof, Smith said. The borough also recently had two interior designers create designs for the center’s inside.
