3 people were injured; brakes apparently failed

SUMMIT TWP — Three people were airlifted by medical helicopter from a multivehicle accident Monday afternoon, after a tractor-trailer apparently lost its brakes and slammed into a pickup truck at the intersection of Bonniebrook Road and Route 422.

Lick Hill Fire Chief Timothy Gold said emergency responders were called to the intersection at about 4:20 p.m. Gold said the tractor trailer was traveling down Bonniebrook Road toward Route 422 when it apparently lost its brakes and ran through the intersection, slamming into a pickup truck hard enough to rip the vehicle's cab from its frame. The tractor trailer subsequently ran off the road and down an embankment near a Dollar General store at the intersection.

Gold said he didn't have immediate information on the injuries of those airlifted from the scene, and it wasn't immediately clear which vehicle or vehicles in which the people were riding.

As of about 5:30 p.m. Monday state police troopers had called in an accident reconstruction team, and both eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 422 had been shut down to allow the group to work. Emergency responders were on scene until about 4 a.m. today, according to the county's 911 Center.

State police would not release any information about the incident as of this morning.
