Mother faces DUI charges

She allegedly drove drunk with kids in car

CENTER TWP — A township mother was more than double the legal limit for alcohol while behind the wheel of a car carrying her two young children when she crashed into another vehicle, authorities said.

State police on Monday charged Ashley Victoria Meeks, 31, with child endangerment in connection with the March 6 wreck in the 400 block of North Duffy Road in Center Township.

Meeks also faces drunken driving and other charges.

Police said the defendant was traveling north about 5:25 p.m. when her car crossed into opposing traffic and collided with a southbound vehicle.

When troopers got there, they found Meeks sitting on the road, holding her 3-year-old daughter. Her 4-year-old son was seated in the vehicle of a passing motorist.

Both children had been riding in their mother’s car when it crashed. Meeks smelled of alcohol and appeared to be impaired, according to court documents.

She admitted drinking earlier that morning but claimed to have stopped about 2 a.m., according to the documents.

She and her children were taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for medical care, police said. The other driver, 61-year-old Darlene Pizer, also suffered minor injuries.

Toxicology results subsequently showed Meeks’ blood-alcohol level was 0.189 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

She is charged with two counts each of child endangerment and reckless endangerment, as well as driving under the influence and several traffic violations. Her preliminary arraignment on the charges is set for April 10 at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
