Boy, 16, charged in city drug bust

A 16-year-old Butler boy was busted Thursday morning with a backpack containing felony weight marijuana, a digital scale and other contraband, city police said.

The bag also contained a stun gun and metal knuckles.

Butler police said the boy, who they did not identify, faces charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, a felony, and possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and possession of prohibited offensive weapons, all misdemeanors

The case will be handled in Butler County juvenile court, said police Deputy Chief David Adam.

Capt. James Hollobaugh found the youth riding in a car following a traffic stop about 12:40 a.m. Hollobaugh stopped the vehicle for traveling through Memorial Park after hours.

The car, driven by a 19-year-old Renfrew man, smelled of marijuana, police said.

Hollobaugh noticed the backpack that was on the passenger side floor where the boy was seated. A search of the pack yielded a large bag of suspected marijuana.

“Forty-six grams,” Adam said, or 1.62 ounces.

The boy was eventually released to his father.

The 19-year-old driver, Adam said, was warned and released.
