Inmate accused of biting officers

Dorian Holmes

A Butler County Prison inmate is accused of biting two correctional officers during a weekend altercation at the lockup. He also kicked one of the same officers.

Dorian Dylan Holmes, 19, of Pittsburgh was arraigned Tuesday on three felony counts of assault by a prisoner.

This was not Holmes’ first act of violence behind bars, authorities said.

He is already awaiting trial on charges he raped and assaulted a former cell mate in July 2016.

About 9:50 a.m. Sunday, correctional officers Mike McConnell and Dustin Heathcote were escorting Holmes back to his cell after he became unruly in the recreation area and tried to tamper with his restraint belt, authorities said.

He allegedly kicked McConnell in the stomach. The officers took the inmate to the ground, documents said.

While the officers tried to restrain Holmes, he is accused of biting McConnell’s right hand and Heathcote’s right arm.

The prison staff eventually got control of the suspect and placed him in the behavioral management unit.

Warden Joe DeMore said Wednesday that Heathcote injured his knee while struggling to restrain Holmes. The officer has been off work since the incident. McConnell was not hurt.

Court and prison records showed the defendant has been in jailed since June 5, 2016, following his arrest in a reported riot at a northern Butler County juvenile detention center.

Holmes, then a student-inmate at the Western PA Child Care in Allegheny Township, in September pleaded no contest to having a homemade weapon during the uprising. He is serving a 3- to 12-month sentence in the case.

In addition to that sentence, he is being held on a combined $175,000 bail in the other criminal cases.
