2017 Hall of Fame class in place

9 individuals, 1977 Butler football team, to be inducted during 52nd annual banquet

BUTLER TWP — The 2017 Butler County Sports Hall of Fame class will feature nine inductees and the 1977 Butler High School football team.

The 52nd annual Hall of Fame banquet will be at 6:30 p.m. April 29 at the Butler Days Inn.

This year’s class includes Jeff Woller, Ron Wissinger, Scott Heinauer, Mark Farabee, Brian Minto, Wayne Roccia, Richard Schnur, Monica Glomb and the late Sam Moore. This group will swell the BCSHOF membership to 378.

The 1977 Butler football team will be the seventh team to gain enshrinement.

Tickets for the banquet are $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Tickets will be available next week at Parkers Appliance in Chicora, Bill’s Beer Barn, Saxonburg Drug, Moses Jewelers and Snack-N-Pack.

Here is a brief look at this year’s inductees:

Jeff WollerA 1988 Knoch graduate, he played football, basketball and ran track for the Knights. He went on to pitch four years for the College of Wooster baseball team.Woller led the North Coast Athletic Conference in strikeouts in 1992 and in earned run average in 1991. He was a standout pitcher for Saxonburg of the Eagle County League as well.

Ron WissingerA Freeport graduate, he became and continues to be a productive amateur softball player at the local, state and national levels.Wissinger has played for eight national championship teams and has been a first team All-American nine times.

Sam MooreA 1951 Muddy Creek Township graduate, he was a stellar baseball and softball pitcher. He helped lead Middle Lancaster to the Eagle County League championship in 1957 and was named MVP in 1954.Moore pitched his 37th Tank Battalion team to its Post championship while in the service in Fort Hood, Texas, in 1956. He was scouted by major league teams, but didn’t enter pro ball because of schooling.

Mark FarabeeA long-time coach at Butler High School, he was an assistant in football for 25 years, was head track and field coach for 11 years and head football coach for six seasons.Farabee also served on the WPIAL Track and Field Committee for 20 years. He guided Butler to WPIAL boys track championships in 1989 and 1990 and coached 10 linemen who went on to play major college football.

Scott HeinauerThe Mars head football coach and athletic director has won 174 games in 25 years with the Planets, including numerous WPIAL playoff appearances.Heinauer has also served as vice president of the WPIAL Athletic Directors Association, president of the Midwestern Athletic Directors Association and president of the Northern Football Coaches Association.

Brian MintoA 1994 Butler graduate, he was named the football team’s Defensive Player of the Year his junior and senior seasons.Minto went on to a solid professional boxing career, competing primarily as a heavyweight. He won numerous boxing championship belts and compiled a 42-11 record with 27 knockouts before retiring in September of last year.

Wayne RocciaA 1968 Seneca Valley graduate, he competed in football and track for the Raiders. He played baseball for two years at Edinboro State College before having to leave for basic training for Vietnam.Roccia went on to serve as football offensive coordinator at Seneca Valley from 1974-82. He was head boys track coach from 1976-2007 for the Raiders and head girls track coach from 1980-2007. His combined track coaching record was 444-180.

Richard SchnurA 1993 Butler graduate, he played center field for the Golden Tornado and hit .349 in 1992. He was 6-1 with an 0.98 earned run average in being named Butler’s Outstanding Pitcher in 1993.Schnur went on to pitch for Indiana (Pa.) University and received PSAC Pitcher of the Year honors. He ranks first all-time at IUP with 38 games pitched, second with 30 starts and 18 complete games.

Monica GlombA 2007 Mars graduate, she was one of the top fast-pitch softball pitchers to ever come out of Butler County.Glomb was a three-time all-section player and led the Planets to the 2006 WPIAL championship. She pitched two perfect games in high school, recorded 745 strikeouts and had a career 0.96 earned run average.1977 Butler footballThe Golden Tornado recorded an 11-0-2 record that season and were WPIAL co-champions.Butler tied Penn Hills 7-7 in the title game and had a 7-0 lead with 2:50 left in the third quarter when the stadium lights went out. Penn Hills had only two first downs at that point. The game was finished the following day.
