Raiders' Newell gets 2nd on mat

Seneca Valley’s Louis Newell made it to the finals at 113 pounds at the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships in Hershey Saturday, but came one win short of a state title.

Newell handled Ed Scott of DuBois with a 4-3 decision to land in the finals for the second consecutive year.

Newell was runner-up last season at 106 pounds.

In the finals, Newell faced a familiar foe in North Hills freshman Sam Hillegas, who entered the bout 42-0.

Hillegas beat Newell in the final at the Southwest Regional last week.

Newell, a junior, dropped a 5-2 decision to Hillegas for a second-place finish. It was his fourth loss to Hillegas this season.

Slippery Rock’s Mike Doerflinger placed sixth at 138 pounds in Class AA.

Doerflinger reached the semifinals, but was pinned by eventual champion Max Murin of Central Cambria.

Doerflinger, a junior, then lost his next two bouts to wind up sixth.
