Newell, Doerflinger win in Hershey

Seneca Valley’s Louis Newell and Slippery Rock’s Michael Doerflinger are both still alive for a state title after first-round victories at Thursday’s PIAA wrestling championships in Hershey.

Newell, a junior, won an 8-2 decision over Carlisle’s Rafael Portilla in Class AAA’s 113-pound bracket.

Following a scoreless first period, Newell scored on an escape and takedown within 11 seconds in the second period and never trailed.

Newell will take on Easton’s Diego Santiago in the quarterfinals today.

Doerflinger, also a junior, was trailing Schuylkill Valley’s Jack Bennett 4-2 late in the second period before the former closed the Class AA 138-pound bout with a flurry.

He pulled even with a reversal with 35 seconds left in the second, then managed an escape, takedown and two near-fall points in the final period to claim a 9-4 decision.

Doerflinger will face Ligonier Valley’s Alex Caldwell in the quarterfinals.

Butler 160-pound senior Caleb Baxter will wrestle Upper Perkiomen’s Jacob Folk in the second round of Class AAA consolations today after going 1-1 Thursday.

In the preliminary round, Baxter prevailed in a 5-4 overtime decision over Boyertown’s Hunter Vogels.

Baxter was on the short end of a 4-1 score after two periods before tying the bout with an escape and takedown, the latter with just 22 seconds remaining in the third period.

Baxter advanced when Vogels was called for unsportsmanlike conduct with 46 seconds left in the overtime period, which awarded the deciding point to Baxter.

In his first-round bout, Baxter was unable to score in a 4-0 loss to Penn Manor’s Jonah Barley.

Tallies by Zach Broskey and Giovanni Sarachine followed as fifth-seeded SV (11-8-2) advanced to face top-seeded Central Catholic in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Dylan Sloat stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced to earn the win in net.

Central Catholic 5, Butler 3 — The Golden Tornado held second-period leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before the Vikings scored three times in the third period at Alpha Ice Complex.
