Matmen close in on finals

3 Butler County wrestlers advance to WPIAL semis

Three Butler County wrestlers advanced to the WPIAL Southwest Regional semifinals after wins on Friday at Canon-McMillan High School.

Butler's Caleb Baxter (160 pounds), Seneca Valley's Lewis Newell (113) and Mars' Alex Hornfeck (126) will have a chance to compete for WPIAL titles Saturday.

Baxter was dominating in his two wins Friday.

He pinned Caleb Lehman of Gateway in 2:31 and then came back with a major decision of Ryan Weinzen of Norwin, 11-2.

Newell was also dominant.

He pinned Gavin James of Plum in 2:43 and followed that up with a 13-3 major decision over Jacob Downing of North Allegheny.

Hornfeck pinned Brady Sherlock of West Mifflin in 1:42 and then won a 5-0 decision over Jason Miller of Norwin.

Baxter will square off in the semifinals against Zachary Hartman of Belle Vernon. Newell will also face a Belle Vernon wrestler in Jacob Dunlop of Belle Vernon. Hornfeck will battle Noah Levett of Kiski.

Girls Basketball

Ellie Thompson scored 25 points as A-C Valley won a District 9 1A consolation game over Northern Potter 59-47.

The Falcons used a strong fourth quarter to pull away.

Olivia Boocks added 11 points for A-C Valley (15-8), who will play Bishop Carroll in the first round of the PIAA 1A playoffs March 11.
