Knoch's Wilson captures IM title

PITTSBURGH — This week marks John Wilson’s final go-around at the WPIAL Swimming Championships.

He proved Thursday that he plans to make the most of it.

Knoch’s senior captured the Class AA boys individual medley title with a school-record finish of 1 minute, 56.84 seconds. It is his second district crown. He won the 100 breaststroke as a sophomore here in 2015.

“I wanted to take off five seconds from my seed time and that’s exactly what I did,” said Wilson, who said earlier this week that winning a title was important to him, but not as important as dropping time.

He took care of both on Thursday.

“I literally could not ask for anything more. I’m thrilled,” he said.

Wilson’s time beat out Winchester Thurston’s E.J. Eppinger by just over a second.

“Everything was going through my head so fast, I don’t remember making my turns,” he said. “My teammates said that they were all good.”

Wilson was also part of Knoch’s foursomes in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, both of which posted school-record times of 1:40.31 and 1:30.52, respectively. The Knights finished second in both events.

Matt Karenbauer, Derek Ekas and Michael Renaud were Wilson’s teammates in the events as the Knights will swim in both at states.

Knoch entered WPIALs as the top seed in the 200 medley event, but was edged out by Laurel Highlands by just .15 seconds.

“We absolutely would have been thrilled to win a title, but we’re happy with how we did,” said Wilson. “We dropped two seconds off the school record.”

Quaker Valley placed ahead of the Knights in the 200 free relay at 1:29.84.

Ekas and Karenbauer also guaranteed themselves a place at states with a fourth-place effort in the 50 freestyle and a fifth-place finish in the 100 butterfly, respectively.

Mars sophomore Andrew Pierre was pleased with his runner-up effort. His time of 1:45.23 in the 200 freestyle was topped only by Springdale’s Kevin Kondrit.

“It’s my best time by three seconds and it gets me to states,” he said. “It’s a relief because I’m swimming the 500 freestyle (today), but I don’t know if I’ll make it in that. Now I know I have a back-up event.”

Penn Township resident Ian Schirra, who swims for Aquinas Academy, was fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.13.

n Sevryn Napora, also of Penn Township, helped Shady Side Academy place sixth in the 200 medley relay and fifth in the 200 freestyle relay.

The lone Butler County swimmer on the girls side to automatically make PIAAs was Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s Brooke Carmazzi, who was third in the 200 IM.

n Carmazzi also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay, along with Anna Schoeppner, Emily Paul and Lena Clerici. The quartet placed sixth.

n Knoch’s Brooke Zukowski grabbed a medal by taking fifth in the 200 IM.
